You are invited to view the paintings created at this year’s Paint the Towns in Fall Color event. The paintings are on sale at a “Buy It Now” sales price and will remain in Gallery 110 North through November 17.

Over 40 Midwest artists participated in this en Plein Air (outdoor painting) competition and exhibition coordinated by artist Dan Rizzi.

Best of Show: “The View South” by James Hempel. This painting needed to be awarded the top prize because it’s just plain beautiful! The panoramic quality and the subtle color and values changes as the painting moves back in space are done to perfection. You can really feel the atmosphere of the day. Excellent work!

Second Place: “Nasty Day” by Steven Monske. I was attracted to this painting because I could feel the cool dampness on the day this was painted. I also enjoy the subtle changes in the greens used for the foliage and the land. It reminds me of an old master’s painting. Very striking!

Third place: “Hillside Farm” by Kerry Kautzer. This little gem has excitement painted all over it! The vibrant strokes of color in the trees and barn subtly filter throughout in the paintings foreground. Full range of values only help to create this little gem.

Best of Fall Color Award: “On Nutt Hill” by Charles Ausavich. This watercolor truly talks about the fall colors and a drive in the country to admire the change of season. The sun dappled road and value choices draw you into the painting. Very nicely done!

Sunshine Award: “Mullet Glow” by Carolyn Larkin. The glow of this painting is amazing. The subtle shift in the greens of the tree foliage are well done and move the eye gently to the background. You can really feel the quality of the day. Good job!

Best of Road America Award: “Catch Me if you Can” by Dan Rizzi. This panoramic view of Road America caught my eye. This is a very complicated composition that took in lots of detail. But it holds together nicely with the color choices and brush strokes. I enjoy the pop of red here and there to help balance the greens. Well Done!

Best of Historic Town Award: “Charles Albrecht House” by Michael Sturm. Although a small painting, this wonderful watercolor popped off the wall for attention. Very expertly painted with lovely details that give the viewer an exact idea of this house and yard. Love it!

Merit Ward: “Search for the Ash Can” by Troy Tatlock. This alley scene captivated me with the impressionistic strokes of color. The aqua floating throughout added a pop of color to a neutral pallet painting. The composition is very well done and provides the viewer with a snippet of life behind the main street. Well done!

Merit Award: “Clouds Give Way to Sun” by Paula Hare. This painting invites you to enter and sit on the bench for a conversation. The warm color choices drew me in. I enjoy the bold strokes of color and the sunny quality it conveys. Lovely piece!

Merit Award: “Crane Callings” by Julia Showers. Love this painting because of the bold stokes of color and the perspective achieved in the composition. I only wish there had been a bit of the sky color reflected in the water area. None the less, a very nice piece.
Merit Award: “Over Looking the Maze” by Paul Goderstad. I enjoy the composition of this painting. I like how the corn pulls you into the composition yet has a quiet area of grass that helps your eye move back into the trees and house. The strokes of color add to the impressionistic feel of this painting.
Artist’s Choice Award: “Nostalgia” by Adele Richert. This tiny painting deserved recognition. I enjoy the monochromatic quality and the composition very much. The gold of the tree foliage helps to warm the painting and the power lines and road move you back in perspective. Another little gem!

Over the past 16 years, the event has drawn thousands as the community comes together to welcome the new year. The highlight of the event is marked by a countdown and the lowering of a giant wedge of Sartori’s world award-winning BellaVitano® Gold Cheese at 10pm.
