The public is invited to a festive reception and silent auction on Friday, October 14, 2022 from 6pm to 9pm to view the paintings created at Paint the Towns in Fall Color. This free admission reception features live music by Marlene Wondergem, piano, and Brian Doherty, piano, and complimentary appetizers and desserts. It is a great opportunity to meet the awesome participating Paint the Towns Artists and to bid on your favorite piece of local art at the Silent Auction until 9:00pm. After the reception and silent auction, the unsold works will remain in Gallery 110 North through November 18 and be for sale at a “Buy it Now” retail price.

Midwest artists are invited to participate in this annual En Plein Air (outdoor painting) competition and exhibition graciously coordinated by artist Dan Rizzi of Plymouth. Best of Show “Approaching” by Lori Beringer Judges comments: A tempestuous, fall sky… the huddle of two kinds of shelter (one natural and the other constructed by human hands)… and light bouncing off what appears to be a tin roof (rusted) of a shed still standing but precariously; this painting is as poetically composed as it is beautifully executed… it’s a visual poem addressing archetypal themes of shelter and wide expanses… I’m especially drawn to the similarities of the two roofs and the clouds (after all, clouds are earth’s roof)… A robust meditation and exultation of habitats, natural and human-made. A very confident hand with assertive brushwork…this is painting I would highly recommend for all who find joy in en plein air painting!
Second Place “Roots” by Todd Schabel Judges comments: A NOCTURN can be both a musical composition inspired by NIGHT (contemporary singer Kate Bush’s song, Sky of Honey, is a musical nocturn) AND is an art term coined by James Whistler to describe a DREAMY, PENSIVE MOOD…(SIDEBAR…you all know Whistler’s famous 1871 picture of his Mom, most correctly known as Arrangement in Grey and Black, #1), The ARTIST of this painting has, indeed, created a dreamy, pensive mood of late-night PLYMOUTH… To my eye, this painting is evocative of Edward Hopper’s work as I feel the artist has situated me in a moment of solitude…and after 2 years of loneliness as we all created cohorts and sheltered in place, I feel this work documents a very particular moment in time…and not without hope as the interior light of the residence in the forefront feels so warm. I would also compliment the artist for allowing me the pleasure of imagining the three street lights as STARS…stars that have left the heavens and are bathing this town with cosmic starlight (this is why I love art…it can turn into a fantasy just like that)

Best of Historic Town “Still of the Train Yard” by Steven Monske Judges comments: I’ve never been to the local train yard but now I want, very much, to visit it… this particular painting is a masterpiece of perspective and there is a “vastness” that the artist achieves by a most careful sense of keen observation and a sentimental point- of-view (I’d like to know if the artist once knew this place before painting it?). This is such a formally precise inquiry into space and place that I’m in awe of the technical skill of the artist. Furthermore, the palette of colors is, to my eye, flawlessly mixed to reveal true textures expressive of weathered buildings and earth… there are puddles of water that faithfully mirror the sky lending a sense of “nowness” to the painting (it makes me feel as though I’ve just arrived to the train yard not long after a rainfall… I love this sense of the viewer arriving at just the “right time” and to the “right place”.
Honorable Mention and Peoples Choice Awards “Flutter, Hum and Buzz” by Naomi Salgado Judges comments: This is one of those paintings wherein two paintings actually exist within the frame… there’s the overall composition of the recognizable house and the car… and then there’s the flutter, hum and buzz of the garden (a veritable “picture in a picture”). The way in which this particular garden is described by the artist is as symphonic as it is suggestive of fireworks… I sense the grace of a musical composition with the color bursts of Fourth of July fireworks, making this painting feel like a Wisconsin celebration of pride of place. This is exactly the kind of work of art that compels you to dream of planting your own garden (which is a work of art, too)
Honorable Mention & Artist Choice Award “Calm after the Storm” by Julia Showers, Judges comments: I never went to an art museum or an art gallery until I was a junior in high school. My uncle, a Jesuit priest, insisted that my education would not be complete until I had been introduced to such temples of beauty and wonder and awe, like the Met, National Gallery, Milwaukee Art Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. Yet I never felt “art-starved” as my parents kept me supplied with old and beautifully illustrated story books, my favorites being those illumined by the hand of N.C. Wyeth. When I saw this particular painting, I TIME TRAVELED back to 1963 as this “landscape after a storm” had not only an autumnal palette of colors I associate with American Romantic Illustration & Roseville Pottery, but the way in which the artist built up the texture of the foliage and the clouds reminded me of the geometry I would later love in certain Cubist paintings. This painting is a PASSPORT for me to the past and a SOUVENIR of what I believe is the most beautiful fall season I’ve experience in years.
Best of Fall Color “Orange Twist” Keary Kautzer Judges comments: This little painting is a jewel… it’s pure, it’s bright, it’s vivid, it’s charming and it can’t be mistaken for anything but FALL in PLYMOUTH…it’s a lovely little remembrance of a discovering a natural “work of art”… it’s as seasonally decorative as it is wonderfully expressive of the cycles of the seasons we enjoy here in WI. Paintings like this evoke feelings of gratitude and pleasure for the artistry of nature
Honorable Mention “Window of Light” by Peggy Hope Judges comments: What I find so compelling about this particular painting is the very quiet allusion to both cloisonne and kintsugi… one might not immediately see the fine lines outlining areas of this landscape but should you draw closer to the canvas, these delicate gold lines recall the art of creating designs on metal vessels with colored-glass paste placed within enclosures made of copper or bronze wires and mending broken pottery with precious metal. This lovely little painting is as much about abstracting the natural form as it is advocating for the healing of nature.
Honorable Mention “Night Lights of Razor Wire” by Troy Tatlock Judges comments: I literally did a DOUBLE-TAKE on my first walk-through of the exhibition with this painting… I actually took two steps backward to BETTER DISCERN both the painterly technique and the subject matter of this exceptionally DYNAMIC work of art. At first glance I ASSUMED I was looking at a traveling carnival scene… a temporary amusement park wherein especially bright LIGHTS are flashing and flickering, enhancing the thrill of roller coasters, tilt-a- whirls and dodgem cars; such lights are as irresistibly seductive as they are happily entertaining… YET this was NO traveling carnival; it’s a PRISON… I was gob-smacked by not only the IRONY of misjudging this locale but, upon closer inspection, the TECHNIQUE the artist employed to suggests thoughts and feelings of TINGLING, VIBRATING, ELECTRICITY… even the grass seems to be charged with light and energy. This is PROVOCATIVE in the most rigorously intellectual way… and I can’t stop thinking about what it means and how it was created.
Quick Paint Award “Last Light on the Marsh” by Lynette Redner Judges comments: I’ve seen a “blushing sky” before and the artist faithfully interpreted and described this rare moment when the sky is like an opal that splits the white light into all the colors of the spectrum. There’s a true sense of calm and peace within this sensitively composed painting… one that instills wonder, joy and awe that such a natural play of color is there for all of us to enjoy…exactly as Mgr Monet knew so very well himself!
Sunshine Award “Foliage Aglow” by Linda Boehlke Judges comments: The quality of LIGHT in this painting is wonderfully natural and true… it’s positively VIVID and LUMINOUS, wherein it’s not at all impossible to SENSE of the WARMTH of the leaves and the COOLNESS of the shadowed grass. Most impressively, the artist demonstrates a commendable mastery of revealing the notched logs in the construction of the cabin… reminding me, so wonderfully, of hours and hours of playing with Lincoln Logs during my boyhood… this painting not only reminded me of that very old memory but put the thought in my head that I ought to order a box of Lincoln Logs for myself!
