View a 6 minute video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtHoM_BaE6w&t=21s The Plymouth Arts Center announces the award winners for its 25th Annual Holiday Membership Exhibit, “Small Works,” in Gallery 110 North. This year, despite the pandemic, 85 PAC members submitted entries for the show. All current members and newly registered members were invited to apply. Patrick Robison, Elkhart Lake, judged the show and selected 14 award winners. Patrick received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master’s Degree in Ceramics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He taught ceramics at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and at Lakeland University. Along with his wife Karen, they own Two Fish Gallery in Elkhart Lake, WI. His work includes clay, metal, glass, and mixed media.

Patrick’s Statement about the show: “It was and honor to judge the 2020 Holiday Membership Exhibit and exciting to see the incredible diversity represented by the PAC member artists. Determining awards is challenging, enjoyable, and done with serious attention given to each entry. Brief comments accompany each of the awarded works. Most importantly, now more than ever, I encourage new and longtime members to continue your artistic journeys with renewed enthusiasm. The value of the communally sharing of creative expression is priceless.”

Gallery 110 North is located in the Plymouth Arts Center, 520 E. Mill Street. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday 10AM to 4PM and Saturday and Sunday, 1-3PM. Closed on Mondays and Holidays. Admission to the gallery is always free. Guests are invited to visit the Gift Shop also featuring the artwork of PAC Members.

Determining awards is challenging, enjoyable, and done with serious attention given to each entry. Brief comments accompany each of the awarded works. Most importantly, now more than ever, I encourage new and long time members continue your artistic journeys with renewed enthusiasm. Best of Show Award to Shirley Sohre for “Artistic Anarchy” photography. Judge Patrick’s Comment: An engaging image that reminds one of birchbark or peeling paint then draws you into abstract graffiti shapes that look like animals. How big is it? What are those shapes? I keep looking.
First Place Award to Jane Kautzer for “The Joy of Summer” photography. Judge Patrick’s Comment: A powerful, asymmetric composition captures a split second in time. The pure joy of leaping into the water, complete with an audience of kayakers.
Second Place to Award Evie Grasse for “After the Roundup” watercolor. Judge Patrick’s Comment: This watercolor nicely captures the atmosphere and solitude of winter as the background animals graze against an abstract rainbow-like woods.
Third Place Award to Barbara Dellger for “Autumn Hideaway” fiber arts. Judge Patrick’s Comment: The imagery and choice of fabric combine to capture the comforts and memories of an autumn place. Outstanding attention to detail and craftsmanship.
Robert Heuel, O.P.A. Signature Award to Wanda Yuhas Weller for “Waiting to be Noticed” ink. Judge Patrick’s Comment: A wonderful use of pure line in all its simplicity. Foreground shading plays nicely with the dark horizon and the white areas magically hold their own.
Merit Award to Micki High for her “untitled” Oil & Cold Wax Painting. Judge Patrick’s Comment: Working in the always-challenging square format, this painting captures the muted tones and complex textures that create the tapestry that is the forest floor.
Merit Award to Dick Bemis for “Bad Storm Brewing” Wood Turned White Oak Burl. Judge Patrick’s Comment: With woodturning, I have been told that you risk danger and the unknown in the search for the beauty that may emerge. This piece, a shining example of a risk well taken.
Merit Award to Denise Presnell for “This Nor That” Oil & Cold Wax Collage. Judge Patrick’s Comment: A vibrant color display that continually plays with your sense of what’s background and what’s foreground. Cold wax collage technique adds a unique richness to the surface.
Merit Award to Barb Ramm for “Metallic Decoration on Wood” photography. Judge Patrick’s Comment: This small but engaging composition is rich with detail, depth and a frame that effectively embellishes it.
Merit Award to Eileen Urness for “House of Glass” polymer clay. Judge Patrick’s Comment: The attention to detail is nothing short of amazing. I’m intrigued by the drooping plants and their “submission” to the confines of the glass house.
Merit Award to Mark & Sylvia Mondloch for “Iron Rose” Forged Iron. Judge Patrick’s Comment: Well designed work showcasing mastery of the material. What fun fabricating a delicate rose of forged iron!
Merit Award to Ann Juneau for “Silver Springs Trail” watercolor. Judge Patrick’s Comment: A striking “birds eye view” that lets you cross the bright white bridge and travel to the mysterious dark forest. The green shapes fluctuate between looking like leaves to becoming trees and shrubs.
Merit Award to William Brusky for “Milkweed” photography. Judge Patrick’s Comment: Although recognizable, this altered image suggests rethinking how we view the familiar.
Merit Award to Lee Sternard for “Winter Sentinels” watercolor. Judge Patrick’s Comment: A tiny watercolor with big contrast and the full depth of winter.
