Welcome and thank you for your interest in pursuing the arts. I hope the following information will be of help to you. All classes are held at the Plymouth Arts Center, 520 East Mill Street in downtown Plymouth. They are held Tuesday evening from 6-9 p.m. and Wednesday daytime 9:00-12:00 and 1-4 p.m., each week for a total of four classes each month.
The classes are ongoing, meaning that students start whenever there is an opening or is convenient for them and attend as they wish. All of the students are at different levels. Some have studied with me for many years and some have started a few months ago. Most of the students are retired persons but I do teach all ages. All of the students, no matter what skill level they are at or past experience they’ve had, must begin with the very basics. We start out with basic drawing and composition, study value and it’s relationship (the first three paintings are done in black and white) and then we move on to color theory. The student paints his/her own color wheel and after that will begin to paint very simple still life set-ups and go on from there. This approach is very advantageous if you have never painted before. For those with experience, it amounts to a quick review and helps you to learn my teaching style.
As far as supplies are concerned, I have a supply list that I expect all of my students to adhere to with regard to color and brand of paint, etc. For the sake of conformity in class, I prefer the student to only purchase items on that list. For a student that has never painted before and has no supplies, it will usually run around $250 to purchase everything. But, this is broken in half because you don’t need to purchase your colors until you begin your color wheel. As a convenience for the students, I will order these items and when purchased through me, students save money and time by not having to look for the items locally.
The cost of the class is $68 a month and is payable in advance on the first Tuesday or Wednesday of each month. Students must pay for a minimum of ten weeks out of every twelve. This allows the student two weeks every three months for vacation, etc. that they do not have to pay for or make up.
Each year, in conjunction with the Joan Kohn Juried Exhibition, students have the opportunity to participate in an exhibit of their works completed during the previous year. This student exhibit is held in the Great Room at the Plymouth Arts Center with an opening reception. It is a wonderful opportunity for friends and family to support the student’s accomplishments. Additionally, each winter we have a combined class Christmas Party to celebrate the season and each other!
